Steps

Cooking the Beans

  1. Clean the beans by taking off the stringy ends, etc.
  2. Parboil beans for about 10 minutes and drain.
  3. In a large frying pan, over low heat, add the olive oil and butter.
  4. When the butter is melted but not burned and the oil is hot, add the diced onion.
  5. Add pepper and garlic powder.
  6. Cook onions until almost translucent.
  7. Add the string beans.
  8. Add more pepper and garlic powder.
  9. Stir everything well. Cover and cook over low heat for about 1 1/2 hours.
  10. Stir occasionally to ensure nothing burns and add more pepper or garlic as desired.
  11. Taste a bean to see if it’s done. If done, take cover off and raise heat to let some moisture out.

Final Assembly

  1. In a casserole dish, put a layer of beans and sprinkle some parmesan cheese over the beans.
  2. Repeatedly add layers of beans and parmesan cheese until all beans are used.
