Solitaire (Klondike) — rules card

Print this page on one sheet, one side only, in landscape. Then:

  1. Crease each FOLD line and fold the sheet up like a concertina.
  2. Crease the two FOLD & TEAR edges and tear the spare paper off against the crease.
  3. The top and left edges are the sheet's own — leave them alone.

No scissors, no double-sided printing. 4 panels, 4x1 accordion.

If the print preview shows a tall page, set the orientation to landscape by hand — some browsers ignore the page setup this sheet asks for, and the fold marks only line up on a wide sheet.

Solitaire (Klondike) 1 players · one 52-card pack, or a shortened one THE IDEA • Build all four suits up from ace to king on the FOUNDATIONS at the top. • Every deal you are given has been solved before you see it. If you are stuck, it is not the deal. THE TABLE • On the columns, build DOWN and in alternating colours: a red six goes on a black seven. • Only a king may be moved into a completely empty column. On a shortened deck the highest rank plays the king's part. • You may move a whole run of cards at once, as long as it is already in order. THE STOCK • Turn cards from the stock to the waste. Only the top of the waste can be played. • Draw one or draw three, and how many times you may go back through the stock, are both settings — and both change which deals are winnable, so the solver is told about them before it proves anything. TAKING IT BACK • Unlimited undo, at every level. A patience you cannot take back is a patience you have to play perfectly first time. • A card may be taken back OFF a foundation and put onto the columns, exactly as in the paper game. Sometimes you need it there. THE HINT • The hint walks one proven winning line, rather than solving again each time. Two separate solutions can each be right and still undo each other. • If you have moved somewhere no win can be reached from, the hint says so plainly instead of pretending. • Follow the hint every time and the game will be won. That is asserted, not hoped. WORDS THIS GAME USES Foundation — The four piles at the top, built up by suit from the ace. Filling them is winning. Tableau — The seven columns you actually work in. Stock and waste — The face-down pile you turn from, and the face-up pile it turns onto. A run — Cards already in order and alternating colour, which can be picked up and moved together. A redeal — Going back through the stock again once it has run out. A winnable deal — One that a complete line of legal moves finishes. Not every shuffle is; you are only given the ones that are. WHERE THESE CAME FROM Pagat.com — Klondike. The patience everybody means by "solitaire". Folk-owned; the name comes from the Klondike gold rush. w.richardpringle.com/games/solitaire/ ▲ FOLD ▼ ▲ FOLD ▼ ▲ FOLD ▼ FOLD & TEAR
