Dots and Boxes

Take turns drawing a line between two dots. Close a box to make it yours, and draw again. Most boxes wins.

✏ī¸ Play

Take turns drawing one line between two dots next to each other. Press near a line to see it, slide your finger to pick another, and lift to draw it. When your line closes the fourth side of a box, the box is yours and you draw again. When every line is drawn, the most boxes wins.

⛓ī¸ Chains

Near the end, every line hands boxes to someone. Boxes in a row with two sides drawn are a chain: give one box away and the other player can take the whole chain. A chain of 3 or more is a long chain. Open the shortest chain you can.

✌ī¸ Leave the last two

When you are given a long chain, take all of it but the last two boxes, and draw the line at the far end instead. The other player takes those two and then has to open the next chain for you. That is a double-cross, and it is how good players win.

đŸ”ĸ The long chain rule

Who ends up opening the chains depends on how many long chains there are. On a board with an even number of dots, the player who goes first wants an odd number of long chains; on an odd number of dots, an even number. The coach (in âš™ī¸ Settings) tells you which you want.

🤖 The computer

đŸŖ Easy takes any box it is given and draws anywhere else. 🙂 Medium never gives a box away while it can help it. 🧠 Hard plays the chains: it counts long chains and leaves the last two.

⌨ī¸ Keys

On the board, the arrow keys move the line shown, Enter or Space draws it, and Escape hides it.

✨ Coach

In a game against the computer, the coach marks the line the chain strategy would draw, and says why.
